POLICE OFFICER AND FIREFIGHTERS

The City of Medford fills vacant positions of Police Officers and Firefighters through the Massachusetts Human Resources Division, Civil Service Unit as required by the State of Massachusetts.  For information regarding exam schedule and for applications to take the exam, please go the following website: www.mass.gov/hrd/csintro.htm
 
Police Officers and Firefighters are employed through the Massachusetts Human Resources Division, Civil Service Unit as needed.  After the examination and certification of candidates by the Massachusetts Resources Division, which give preference to * “Veterans”, the City of Medford utilizes the Residency Preference system allowed by the Massachusetts law for new hires to police officer and firefighter positions.  Preference is given to candidates who reside in Medford for one year prior to the date of the civil service examination.  * “Veterans” Preference is provided for appointment to Civil Service positions to veterans as per the Massachusetts Civil Service system. * "Veterans" shall mean any person, male or female, including a nurse, (a) whose last discharge or release from his wartime service, as defined herein, was under honorable conditions and who (b) served in the army, navy, marine corps, coast guard, or air force of the United States for not less than ninety days active service, at least one day of which was for wartime service, provided, that any person who so served in wartime and was awarded a service-connected disability or a Purple Heart, or who died in such service under conditions other than dishonorable, shall be deemed to be a veteran notwithstanding his failure to complete ninety days of active service.

LABOR SERVICE

Laborers in the City of Medford’s Department of Public Works are employed as necessary.  Labor Service positions include laborers, skilled laborers, mechanics and craftsmen. Selections for an entry-level Labor Service position are based on registration rather than on a written examination. Candidates are considered for employment in the order of their registration with the City of Medford. If you wish to apply for a Labor Service position in Medford, please complete the following Application for the City of Medford Labor Service, and return it to the Medford City Hall, Personnel Office, Rm. 204, Medford, MA  02155.  At that time we will take a copy of your license to process the application.  Please bring your license.  The application will be given a Labor Service Number.  The Labor Service Number will be sent to the applicant.  The application will be kept on file for five years, at which time it will be up to the applicant to apply for renewal.


LUNCH ATTENDANT APPLICATION
CAFETERIA WORKER APPLICATION

Lunch Attendant and Cafeteria Worker are employed as necessary.  These positions are based on registration rather than on a written examination.  Candidates are considered for employment in the order of their registration with the City of Medford.  If you wish to apply for a Lunch Attendant or Cafeteria Worker position in Medford, please complete the following Application for the City of Medford Labor Service, and return it to Medford City Hall, Personnel Office, Rm. 204, Medford, MA  02155.  The application will be given a Labor Service Number and forwarded to the School Department.

Traffic Supervisors are employed as necessary.  If you are interested in this position, please complete the City of Medford Traffic Supervisor Application, and return it to Medford City Hall, Personnel Office, Rm. 204, Medford, MA  02155.  The application will be logged in and forwarded to the Police Department.  Candidates are considered for employment in the order of their application being completed and submitted.
