Medford is one of over 500 local governments worldwide that participates in the CCP Campaign. Medford joined the Campaign in 1999. The City completed a greenhouse gas emissions inventory, set reduction targets, and developed a local Climate Action Plan. In October 2001, Medford became the first city in Massachusetts with an approved Climate Action Plan.
The City has made great strides in implementing several of the plan’s challenging recommendations, including:
• |
significantly increasing the energy efficiency of its municipal buildings; |
• |
integrating Biodiesel (B20) and electric cars into the municipal fleet; |
• |
converting traffic signals to light emitting diodes (LEDs); |
• |
installing photovoltaic panels at City Hall and Hormel Stadium; |
• |
retrofitting the school bus fleet with diesel particulate filters and converting to ultra low sulfur diesel to achieve up to a 90% reduction in criteria air pollutants (funded by the US EPA’s Clean School Bus Program); |
• |
retrofitting the Department of Public Works fleet with diesel oxidation catalysts; |

The Medford Energy Task Force consists of members of various municipal departments, utilities, and representatives from state agencies.
Medford is also a member of the German-American Dialog on Renewable Energy (GADORE). In December of 2006 the City's Environmental Agent Patricia Barry participated in a Renewable Energy Study Tour in Germany to learn about the drivers and impacts of Germany's commitment to wind power, solar power, and biofuels.
