Did you know that the stormwater, rain and melted snow that runs off the roadways and sidewalks in your neighborhood eventually reaches the Mystic River or nearest stream, pond or wetland. Stormwater carries sediment and surface pollutants such as petroleum products, litter/trash, bacteria, phosphorus and nitrogen. Anything that enters a storm sewer system is discharged untreated into the waterbodies we use for swimming, kayaking, boating, and fishing! Please see below or review our stormwater pollution solutions to learn what you can do to help protect our waters.
City of Medford Stormwater Management Program
The US EPA regulation (40CFR 122.34) requires the City of Medford at a minimum to develop, implement, and enforce a stormwater program designed to reduce the discharge of pollutants from the City’s municipal storm sewer system to the maximum extent practicable. The stormwater management program includes the following six minimum control measures:
• |
Public education and outreach on stormwater impacts; |
• |
Public involvement/participation; |
• |
Illicit discharge detection and elimination; |
• |
Construction site stormwater runoff control; |
• |
Post-construction stormwater management in new development and redevelopment; |
• |
Pollution prevention/good housekeeping for municipal operations; and |
• |
Neighborhood Stormwater Pollution Prevention. |
